If you've never tried halotherapy before, the idea of sitting in a room full of salt might sound a little unusual. But guests who visit NY Salt Den in Latham, NY for the first time almost universally say the same thing afterward: "I had no idea it would feel like that." In the best possible way.
So what actually happens during a salt cave session? Here's a complete first-timer's guide to your visit.
Before You Arrive
No special preparation is needed. Just wear comfortable, breathable clothing — think something you'd wear to yoga or lounging at home. Avoid heavy perfumes, colognes, or strongly scented lotions, as these can interfere with other guests' experience in the shared cave space. Leave your phone on silent or in your locker — the cave is a screen-free zone.
We recommend arriving 5–10 minutes early, especially for your first visit. This gives you time to check in, ask any questions, use the restroom, and settle in without feeling rushed.
Arriving at NY Salt Den
You'll find us at 654 Watervliet Shaker Rd in Latham, NY — easy to reach from anywhere in the Albany Capital Region. When you walk in, our team will greet you, confirm your booking, and walk you through what to expect. If it's your first time, we'll take a couple of minutes to explain how the halogenerator works and answer any questions about the session.
Inside the Salt Cave
Our Himalayan salt cave is a serene, dimly lit room with walls and floors lined with pink Himalayan salt. You'll sit in a comfortable zero-gravity recliner or chair. The lighting is low and warm. Soft, calming music or nature sounds play in the background. The temperature is kept cool and comfortable — typically around 68–72°F.
Once everyone is settled, our halogenerator quietly activates. You won't see or taste anything dramatic — the salt particles are microscopic. What you will notice is that the air feels unusually clean and fresh, similar to how the air feels at the ocean or after a thunderstorm. Just breathe normally. That's it. No technique required.
What You'll Experience During the Session
Most guests report feeling deeply relaxed within the first 10–15 minutes. The combination of the cave environment, the clean salt air, and the absence of screens and noise creates a rare opportunity for genuine mental stillness. Many guests fall asleep. Some meditate. Some simply let their minds wander.
Physically, guests with respiratory issues often notice their sinuses and airways feeling clearer as the session progresses. This is the halotherapy working — the salt is naturally anti-inflammatory and helps thin and loosen mucus in the airways. Your skin may also feel slightly tingly or refreshed as the salt settles on the surface.
A standard group session runs 45 minutes. Private sessions can be customized in length.
After Your Session
When the session ends, you'll gently transition back. Most guests feel calm, clear-headed, and slightly sleepy — in the best possible way. Some experience a mild "detox" effect in the first 24 hours, particularly if they have respiratory congestion, which can temporarily increase before improving. This is completely normal and a sign the salt is doing its job.
Drink plenty of water after your session. Avoid heavy exercise immediately afterward if you're feeling particularly relaxed. Many guests love pairing their salt cave session with a massage or facial on the same visit for a complete wellness day.
Common First-Timer Questions
Can I bring my child? Absolutely. Salt therapy is gentle and beneficial for all ages, including children with asthma or allergies. We welcome families.
Is it claustrophobic? Not at all. The cave is an open, airy room — not an enclosed tunnel or pod. Most guests find it immediately comfortable.
Will my clothes get salty? Very minimally. The salt particles are so fine you won't notice them on your clothing after the session.
How many sessions do I need? One session is genuinely enjoyable and beneficial. For more significant respiratory or skin improvements, regular sessions (weekly or bi-weekly) produce the best results. Our 10-session package is the most popular option for regular visitors.
